Hakushu 12, unlike the Yamazaki 12 & discontinued Hibiki & Yoichi 12 yr olds, is still somewhat available in the U.S. (specifically California). Overall, I find the subtle hints of smokiness on the nose & palate (really not a whole lot of smoke) make Hakushu 12 much more interesting and enjoyable than other Japanese whiskies in the same price.

I prefer Hakushu over Yamazaki but they are different whiskys so your preference could be different. In my area, I can find Yamazaki 12 for ~$90-100 (on a lower end) and Hakushu 12 for ~$70-80. Hakushu for me at the NAS and 12 Year level. However, the Yamazaki 18 is way better than Hakushu 18, imo.
